The Different Types of Boilers
There are two types of boiler heating systems: fire tube and water tube boilers. Understanding how each of these works can help any homeowner figure out which type of boiler best fits their needs. Here’s a brief explanation of each boiler and what kind of spaces they’re generally used for:
Fire Tube Boilers
Much like tankless water heaters, fire tube boilers use hot gases to transfer heat to cold spaces. The gas is heated by fire before moving through a tube that’s covered in hot water. Once the gas is surrounded by hot water, it transforms into steam through a conductive process that saturates the gas with the hot water. From there, the steam is used to create heat that then moves into your building, warming up any room the tubing and vents are connected to. While these types of boilers are generally used for larger buildings, houses with a large number of rooms and/or guest quarters could benefit from this type of boiler.
Water Tube Boilers
Though water tube boilers also create steam, the process of how it’s created is completely opposite from fire tube boilers. Instead of the gas in the tube being surrounded by hot water, these systems have water in the tube that’s surrounded by hot gas. One major benefit of water tube boilers is the ability for steam to be created much faster. In the system’s design, the tube uses less water which helps create a more efficient process. Water tube boilers are popular amongst a lot of homeowners due to their safe and effective nature.
